New Bedford in the Palm of Your Hand:
A Citywide Storytelling Initiative
with New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park
Artist-in-Residence Beth Jones
October-December 2024
The stories we cherish can often be told through an item small enough to hold in our hand or carry in our arms. Seashells, fishing line, notebook, coffee mug, paintbrush, recipe card, souvenir, postcard, faded t-shirt, keychain, or a single glove.
All New Bedfordites - and those linked to the city - old and new, are invited to share the story of a belonging connected to their New Bedford experience. Items can be left on loan or a photo will be taken.
Shelves from a local resale shop will display the borrowed objects in a display. Photos will be shown on the walls. The project will be globally accessible through a GIS StoryMap website holding video recordings of the storytellers and providing geolocated identification across New Bedford (please click here to view ongoing site). Imagine this as a multimedia treasure map of precious stories, belonging, and belongings.
These stories will reflect the uniqueness and richness of the city and its residents. The goal is for all New Bedfordites, and those with ties to the city, to see themselves represented accurately in this work.
